Summary
[edit]DescriptionJoseph T. Bowen Country Club (14112392000).jpg |
The Joseph T. Bowen Country Club in Waukegan (1843). In 1857, the house on the property was sold to John Charles Haines, a flour manufacturer and politician, for use as a summer home. The next year, Haines was elected Mayor of Chicago, interrupting two terms by John Wentworth. Haines was later elected to the Illinois Senate. The mayor of Waukegan bought the house in 1909, intending to donate it to the city, but they refused. Two years later, Jane Addams and Louise DeKoven Bowen visited the property during a excursion searching for a new summer camp for Hull House. After seeing the site, they purchased it in 1911. It was renamed after Bowen's late husband. For the next 52 years, the Hull House Association provided children the opportunity to camp at the club. The Chicago and North Western Railway provided free transportation for the 40,000 children that visited. The camp moved to East Troy in 1963 and the club was sold to the Waukegan Park District.
