  • Identification proposed by user Ecummenic (talk) based on the comparison with some portraits of Leopold II (see images below) and the lack of physical resemblance of the sitter of this portrait to verified representations of Joseph II.
Description
"Joseph II (1741 - 1790), Sohn von Maria Theresia und Franz Stephan von Lothringen sowie Franz I, als Kaiser Franz II Joseph Karl (1768 - 1835). Die beiden Gemälde stellen Herrscher der Habsburger Monarchie in Lebensgröße ganzfigurig dar, jeweils in einem Innenraum mit Velum, Sessel sowie attributiven, malerischen Zugaben wie etwa eine Steinfigur der weiblichen Allegorie der Stärke mit Löwe und Ruder als Symbol der gerechten politischen Führung. Das erstgenannte Gemälde zeigt Joseph II an einem Tisch stehend, der rechts im Bild mit einem zum Boden herabgeführten, roten Samttuch bedeckt ist, darauf die Habsburger Krone, die Kaiserkrone des Heiligen Römischen Reiches Deutscher Nation sowie der Reichsapfel. Der Kaiser in prächtigem, goldenem Paradeornat mit weiß gefüttertem Mantel, mit Goldbrokatspitzen besetzt, über der Brust ein weiß-rotes Schärpenband, am Hals das rote Band mit dem Orden des Großmeisters des Goldenen Vlieses. Das Gegenstück zeigt dessen Neffe Franz I Joseph Karl, Sohn des Leopold II (1747 - 1792), Bruder von Joseph II. Franz I Joseph war der letzte herrschende Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reiches Deutscher Nation, hier noch jugendlich wiedergegeben, mit Degen an der Seite, entsprechendem Ornat und Umhang, ebenfalls mit dem Orden vom Goldenen Vlies. Der rot bezogene Sessel ist hier rechts im Bild abgestellt, die Reichsinsignien mit Habsburger Krone, Erzherzogkrone, Kaiserkrone und Reichsapfel links auf einem Kissen und ebenfalls auf einem Tisch mit rotem Samttuch. In der rechten Hand hält der Herrscher das Zepter auf das Kissen aufgestützt. Franz I Joseph war nach dem Tod seines Vaters 1792 an die Herrschaft gelangt. Beide Gemälde in qualitätvoller Ausführung, wobei die Köpfe wohl von einem Meister, die dekorativen Zugaben in der Werkstatt entstanden sein dürften." [1]
