enmost free from this influence, good ground for suspicionof a still lurking admiration for some of his mastersidiosyncrasies ; we shall again have occasion to refer tothis, when his late work is under consideration. With the first glance at the instrument, the parts towhich the attention is drawn principally are the massiveborder, and the extremely bold purfling, thick enough tohave adorned a good sized viola. The general contour is much changed from the 1706specimen, there is the flatter curving at the waist, thisappearing to be much longer, from its gentle progressfrom point to point, and seeming more complex than itreally is. There is an emphasis or inward cutting of theline at the upper part, which suggests an idea thatthe designer projected a further originality of form witha little more squareness at the under part of theshoulder. Treating this as a slight experimental curve, heprobably abstained from often repeating it, from anapparently natural dislike to anything approaching
