The question naturally follow-ing, Why ? brings us to the consideration of what factsare at our disposal concerning the output of JosephGuarnerius and his contemporaries. Mr. Honeymans violin is of bold design, the treatmentof the border, which is rather broad, and the corners beingsuggestive of the manner of Gisalberti. The modellingis of gentle rise and the sides or ribs of full averageheight. The back is of one piece of his boldly figuredsycamore, the curls declining from left to right. It willbe seen that the waist curves do not appear so extendedas the 1734-38 types. The scroll (not represented) is offull size, and the side view shows the curve of thegrooves running down to the shell very full, the gougingof the turns being executed in the usual masterly manner.Length 14m., greatest width 8J in. Miss Eveline Pethericks Joseph Guarnerius belongsto a type, or it might be termed a batch, sent forth at the HIS WORK AND HIS MASTER. 205
