José de Jesús Vallejo built two flour mills at the mouth of Alameda Cañon, which would later form the settlement of Vallejo Mills.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: José de Jesús Vallejo was born in California (1798) and led a distinguished military life in his youth. He and his wife Maria Soledad had seven children. In 1842 he was awarded the 17,000-acre land grant of Rancho Arroyo de la Alameda, upon which he grazed livestock and built two flour mills. Like other rancho owners, Vallejo saw his land invaded by greedy American squatters after the gold rush. He had to file almost 150 law suits trying to regain his land, only to lose it to legal costs in the end. He died a broken man at age 82, from complications due to a stroke suffered seven years earlier.
