Description

Flag of Jordan
This is a photo of a monument in Jordan identified by the ID
ID JA-01. Jordan, Jerash, (The Hyppodrome). When the Hadriatic project to expand the city over the south necropolis was abandoned, the western side of the Gerasa/Philadelphia road was free to build this hyppodrome (which means "circus" in latin). It is smallest known hyppodrome of the Roman Empire, and the best preserved; particulary the arched carceres, which are the starting gates where the horses would be positioned. By the late 4th century the northern part of the hyppodrome had been transformed into an amphitheater for gladiator fights and other sports.
