Summary
[edit]DescriptionJoong-Dae Elementary School 중대초등학교 (5477801131).jpg |
I am familiar with this school; I used to be enrolled in here for a few years in the 1980s. It is best known for its outstanding Little League baseball team. But these buildings are brand-new, having replaced the buildings I had studied in. The school was bursting at the seams in the 1980s, with population control still being a major issue in South Korea, a Confucian society with high birthrates. But the 21st Century, where child planning has become too successful and the prohibitive costs of raising and tutoring a child act as deterrents, sees South Korea with a very low birthrate, where it is rare for any couple to have more than one child. The theocratic far-right government's solution to low birthrates was very draconian and archaic: in 2009, government workers were told to go home early one Wednesday a month to make babies, and abortion was banned. This new campus has only about half the number of classrooms as the old buildings, and even then, chances are each class has only 30-40 kids rather than the typical 60 in my days. Another evidence of social changes in South Korea is seen in the parking area: a Honda Civic. Small cars (even pricey imports like the Civic) are starting to command respect. |
