Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in November 2021, the three-story brick mixed-use building at 236 Massachusetts Avenue (corner Normal Avenue) in Buffalo, New York is a fine early-period example of Queen Anne-style commercial architecture with some pretty nifty Classically-influenced ornamentation, especially on the multi-story metal bays that stretch between the second and third stories, which boast decorative leaded glass at the tops of the windows and swag reliefs in the spandrel panels at center. The decorative brickwork on the frieze features some impressive corbelling and other geometric ornamentation. The building was constructed in 1895 and seems to have functioned principally as apartments (it was known in its earliest years as Johns Flats). Records of the occupants of the ground-floor retail spaces are much more scant, but include J. H. Cole's newsstand and tobacco shop, and A. F. Shaw, a dry goods merchant.
