Notes |
English: In this painting, official Canadian war artist William Beatty's shell hole looks like it was dug by a giant, jagged-edged spoon. In reality, a massive explosion gouged the earth. The beauty that Beatty found in the war-torn landscape belies the danger he experienced while drawing at the front. Describing working while bullets were hitting close by, Beatty wrote: "it is not conducive to steady draughtsmanship to work under these conditions." |
