Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The John W. Cowper House, at 126 Oakland Place. Built in 1928 from a design by the firm of Hudson & Hudson, the house features exterior walls of cement plaster with quoins and trim in variegated Briar Hill sandstone from western Pennsylvania, and a roof of coarsely cut slate tiles. A civil engineer native to Suffolk, Virginia, John W. Cowper moved to Buffalo in 1914 and founded the Cowper Construction Company which went on to become probably the most prominent contracting firm in Buffalo of its day, responsible for the construction of such downtown landmarks as the Buffalo Athletic Club, the Courier-Express Building, the Rand Building, and most prominently, Buffalo City Hall, which was under construction simultaneously to Cowper's own house. Cowper lived here until his death at the age of 73 in 1944; his widow Josephine remained there until 1968 whereupon it was sold to its current private owners.
