Summary

[edit]
Description John Bush House, 6 Lincoln Parkway at Soldiers Circle, Buffalo, New York, October 2012. One of the oldest houses on the street, this Beaux-Arts delight dates to 1903 and sports a Tuscan portico with a denticulated cornice crowning its entablature; look closely and you will also see the handsome front door bedecked with a Gibbs surround and Beaux-Arts ornamentation in white terra cotta, including a cartouche and a stylized bay-leaf border around the top of the entrance. The bay leaf motif is continued in the wreaths lining the top of the second story; the mansard roof in red terra cotta tile with pedimented dormer windows is also notable. John Westervelt Bush (1844-1924) was the son of Myron Bush, who with George Howard owned a leather manufactory in the city's First Ward. After completing school, John W. Bush joined the family business, and took over complete control of it at his father's death in 1885. In addition to his continued ownership of Bush & Howard, John W. Bush would also find success as a lawyer. Bush lived at this house until his death, after which the home was owned by the Duffy family for many decades - first by Bernard Duffy, cofounder of the Duffy Silk Company, then by his daughter, Margaret Duffy Troup.
