[edit]DescriptionJohn Tamatoa Baker modeling as Kamehameha I, composite (PP-67-8-013).jpg |
English: Portrait of John Baker Modeling as Kamehameha in Royal Feather Robe, Helmet, and Breechcloth and Holding Lance, unknown date. He and his brother Robert Hoapili served as models for the Kamehameha Statue by Thomas Ridgeway Gould. This is believed by Jacob Adler to be a composite image with the legs belonging to a Hawaiian fisherman, although Jean Charlot claimed the legs belong to Robert Hoapili Baker. According to the contemporary writings of Walter M. Gibson, "[t]he artist has copied closely the fine physique of [Robert] Hoapili [Baker]...and it presents a noble illustration and a correct type of superior Hawaiian manhood".
