Summary
[edit]DescriptionJohn Roth House, Clarence, New York - 20200917.jpg |
English: The John Roth House, 9060 Main Street, Clarence, New York, September 2020. One of the oldest extant houses in the town as well as one of only a few surviving stone farmhouses from Clarence's earliest days, the John Roth House is a fine showcase of the Federal style of architecture with its sidelight-framed front entrance and symmetrical façade, though the front-gabled roof smacks more of the Greek Revivalism that was also enjoying popularity at the time. The identity of its builder and original owner are unknown, nor is it known exactly when the house was built, though clues to the latter can be gleaned from the significant architectural similarities of this house with Spoor's Hotel, located in Clarence Hollow and built c. 1810, as well as the fact that this area of Main Street was known to be an important one during the War of 1812, boasting a military hospital and supply depot that had been hastily erected by American troops after they were driven from Buffalo. In their Intensive Level Historic Resource Survey, the Clinton Brown Company estimates c. 1820 for when it was built. The 1865 New York State Census shows the home as being owned by John Roth (1819-1897), a Hessian-born farmer in whose family the house remained until some time in the late 1920s or early 1930s. The addition seen here to the right of the original part of the house dates to the 1960s. |
