Summary

[edit]
Description
English: John Rae's Grave
John Rae was born at the Hall of Clestrain. Considered by many to be the greatest Arctic Explorer of all time, Rae was denied his place in history as Victorian Society attempted to conceal the horrific truth about what had happened to Sir John Franklin's ill-fated 1845 expedition to find the legendary North-West Passage across the top of North America. He is the subject of the book Fatal Passage by Ken McGoogan. Rae died in London on 22 July 1893 but his body was brought 'home' by his wife. There is a fine memorial and tribute inside the Cathedral
