g :■— Will hoist the Dutch Flag at yard arm and one minute after-wards will fire one gun. The Vessel Answering :— Will fire one gun, and one minute afterwards will hoist theEnglish Flag at the mast head. Upon which the vessel asking will lower the Dutch Flag andhoist the French Flag in the same place. PRIVATE NIGHT SIGNALS : The Vessel Asking:— Will show three flares horizontally. The Vessel Answering :— Will fire one gun and show two lights, one above theother. Upon which the vessel asking will extinguish one light leavingonly two showing. When within hail, the watchword of the day will be given. Be-fore midnight, the first word will be given (in challenge) andwill be answered with the second. After midnight, the secondword will be given (in challenge) and will be answered with thefirst. The watch words will be numbered from one to thirty-one,because it is arranged that the date of the day will give theword, observing that the astronomical day from noon to noonwill be used.

FLAGSHIP BROOKLYN, JULY 8tH, I905 JOHN PAUL JONES LAST CRUISE 45 as he won his victory on the Bonhomme Richard with a crewequally composed of French and American sailors and marines. At the Esplanade des Invalides a pavilion had been erectedwhere the coffin was placed on a bier, covered with flags and aprofusion of flowers. Behind the bier the French and Americanflags draped together formed a beautiful background to thebrilliant crowd of ambassadors and dignitaries of all nationswho reverently surrounded the catafalque bearing the remains ofthe great sea-fighter, who, as captain of the Ranger had raised thefirst American flag and had received from a French man-of-warthe first salute ever given to this flag by a foreign nation. What an inspiring sight it was to see the soldiers of France
