English: The Fiery Cross. Engraving of the painting The Fiery Cross by John Lamont Brodie, signed. John Lamont Brodie exhibited a painting entitled The Fiery Cross and the Royal Academy in 1863. The painting illustrates the old Scottish custom of summoning clansmen to war with a burning cross, and may have been inspired by a scene from Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake in which such a cross is carried over Loch Katrine. |
