Summary

[edit]
Description
English: John Home plaque, Maritime Street Home, the son of Leith's town clerk, joined the Kirk in 1745 and took up arms against the Jacobites. The following year he was captured at the Battle of Falkirk and held prisoner in Doune Castle. His 'History of the Rebellion' is one of the main contemporary sources for events during the Rising. After becoming Minister of Athelstaneford in Midlothian, he incurred the wrath of the Kirk authorities and some of his fellow ministers by daring to write stage-plays, an activity many regarded as morally dubious. His 'Douglas' proved to be a great success, inspiring the memorable interruption to the stage action on its opening night when an overly optimistic spectator cried out, "Whaur's yer Wullie Shakespeare noo?"
