Description

I decided to visit the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, located on University of Massachusetts - Boston campus.

A mockup of a news room showing the returns from the 1960 presidential election. Popular vote was very close, as this was a very tight contest, and it appeared at first that Vice President Richard Nixon would win. But eventually Senator Kennedy pulled ahead and picked up significant amounts of electoral votes, to clinch the presidency.

The map shows the final results. Historically in the US, the incumbent party, in this case the Republicans and Nixon, would be in red while the challenging party, in this case the Democrats and Kennedy, would be in blue. After 2004 though, the current pattern of using blue for Democrats and red for Republicans, regardless of incumbency, emerged, along with the terms "blue state" and "red state" to describe the cultural divide. (It is a reversal of the convention used in most countries, where blue is used for the main right-wing party and red for the main left-wing party.) This map shows California and the West Coast as Republican, and the Deep South as Democratic, a complete reversal of today's patterns; the Kennedy-Johnson Administration's civil rights initiatives, and Nixon's Southern Strategy which would welcome many racist white Southern Democrats into the Republican Party, would account for the flip.

Every United States President since Hervert Hoover (1929-1933) has had a Presidential Library established after his service. All are run in conjunction with the National Archives, to house various records and documents pertaining to a given president's term(s). The Kennedy Library is the only Presidential library in New England, commemorating the first US President of Irish and/or Roman Catholic background.
