[edit]A Pilot Drowned at Sea. The barkentine Edward Cushing, of Camden, Maine arrived here yesterday and reported the drowning of John Canvin, the elder, a pilot, of the pilot boat Charles II Marshall, No. 3, who was trying to steer the Cushing to this port. Canvin started to walk across the poop deck. He slipped and slid against the railing, and over into the sea. The crew at once manned a lifeboat and for half an hour cruised around in hopes of finding him. Canvin was seventy-two years old and one of the oldest men in the service. His son is a pilot. He leaves two daughters who married pilots.
