Description
English: Bust portrait of a man in uniform. "Maj. Jno. C. Smith. over. C. S. A." (written below image). "Maj. Smith During the years of 1858 - 1861. Commanded the Battalion of St. Louis Riflemen 4 Cos. of well drilled and disciplined of St. Louis militia. maj J Smith Maj Jno. C. Smith. St. Louis. Drill Master. C. S. A. Ala. Dept. Presented by Jos. Boyce to Mo. H. Soc. July 3/15" (written on reverse side). Maj. Smith was a member of the St. Louis militia battalion, but was held as a prisoner at Johnson's Island during the war (John Smith papers, MHM archives).
