Notes "Am 1. Oktober 1825 wurde Bode in Braunschweig zum Magistratsdirektor gewählt, ab 5. Dezember 1832 war er Stadtdirektor (was einem heutigen Bürgermeister gleich kommt) und damit Amtsnachfolger von Johann Heinrich Wilmerding, der sich sehr für Bode eingesetzt hatte. Seine Hauptaufgabe sollte darin bestehen, die Wahrung der Rechte der Stadt Braunschweig gegenüber dem Herzogtum Braunschweig sicherzustellen. Am 5. September 1828 verlieh ihm die juristische Fakultät der Universität Göttingen ehrenhalber den Titel „Dr. jur.“. Bekannt wurde Wilhelm Bode durch seine vermittelnde Funktion nach dem Sturz Herzog Karls II. durch die Braunschweiger Bürger im September 1830. Bode und der von ihm gegründeten Bürgerwehr ist es zu verdanken, dass weder Preußen noch das Königreich Hannover mit militärischer Macht in die Krise eingriffen. Ihm gelang es, den jüngeren Bruder Karls II., Herzog Wilhelm, nach Braunschweig zu holen, damit dieser fortan die Regierungsgeschäfte führe."[1]
