Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The "Joggins raft", a giant log raft floated from Joggins, Novia Scotia, to New York in August 1888. The 595-foot raft was designed to a patent by Hugh R. Robertson and built under his supervision for Brooklyn shipbuilder James D. Leary, who used some of the timber for his shipyard, the large piles for his dock construction contracts, and the rest made available for sale at his timber yard. Leary is said to have realized savings of tens of thousands of dollars in transport costs by the construction of such rafts. The engraving was based on a photograph by Dr J. J. Higgins, and shows the raft being floated down the East River guided by several tugs. The large vessel beside the raft is the Fall River Line steamer Pilgrim.
