English: Cannon. Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur
Meherangarh Fort was begun in the 15th century, its encircling walls being added a century later. During the ensuing centuries, Jodhpur underwent an unstable mix of alliances and warfare with the Mughals as well as with its neighbors, Jaipur and Udaipur. The Mughals sacked Jodhpur in 1678. Thirty years later, Ajit Singh recaptured the city and retrieved his kingdom. In the early 19th century, Jodhpur signed a treaty of friendship with Great Britain, and joined India following Independence and the British withdrawal. As seen today, most buildings in the fort date from the 17th century, with 18th century additions (reigns of Jaswant Singh, 1638 - 1678, and his son Ajit Singh, 1707 - 1724, interrupted by the Mughal occupation mentioned above.) |
