Grouchy and Beaumonts dragoons, andDHautpouls cuirassiers arrived in quick succession. Thefortress of Spandau, which protects the capital on thewestward, was summoned. The commandant refused tosurrender to a mere mounted force, but capitulated nextday on the appearance of Lannes corps. The same day(25 October), Napoleon rode in triumph into Berlin.
