Foi adquirido pela Sociedade de Amigos do Museu Imperial, por 53 mil reais, e doada ao Museu Imperial, estando localizada em sua reserva. O retrato equestre tem como base a estampa de número LVIII do livro "Luz da Liberal e Nobre Arte da Cavalaria", de 1790, por Manuel Carlos de Andrade (1755–1817). Pertenceu à coleção de Ricardo Ribeiro do Espírito Santo Silva (1900–1955) e anteriormente à Coleção Real Portuguesa, no Palácio de Queluz.
