ly clapped his hands. Yes,I see, he said. Oh, Uncle Lewis, I wishI could see the animals that made thesetracks all out on the snow together. Itwould be like a comical fairy story. Uncle Lewis laughed. It really wouldbe fun, he replied. 96 A WINTER WALK. Let us go and look over that bank,he said, when they had gone on a littlefarther. Just as they reached the edge of thebank there was a sudden, startled rush ofsomething small and gray, which disap-peared under the edge of the bank at theirfeet. They both stooped down and lookedcloser. It was a tiny animal, probably afield-mouse, judging by the track it hadleft in the snow. Why, said Charlie, looking intently, it certainly went under this bank, but itstracks only go part way up. That is so, said Uncle Lewis, gettingdown to peer over, for here is the hole itwent into. You see, the mouse runs along inthe snow until it is about a foot from itshole and then it leaps in, leaving the trackscut off far enough away to puzzle and mis-lead its enemies. This is undoubtedly thetiny creatures means of safety and defence.Perhaps he has a wife and children underthe bank to care for, and his winter storesare undoubtedly laid away there. Howwonderfully God has taught each of hiscreatures how to defend and care for itselfand little ones ! Charlie knelt down on the edge of thebank and peeped into the little hole. Weknow your secret, little mouse, he ex-claimed softly, but we wont hurt you,you wise little fellow. It is time to go back now, said UncleLewis, looking at his watch. All right, answered Charlie, scram-bling to his feet. But, Uncle Lewis, hewent on, as he ran along by his side, I 98 A WINTER WALK. knew there were flowers and lots of nicethings to see in the woods in summer, butI never knew
