Title
jews harp
Description
English: Forged copper alloy Jews or jaws harp or small mouth-held, lyre-shaped musical instrument which was held by holding the frame between the teeth and striking an iron tongue with the fingers. Remains of the corroded iron tongue are evident at the end of the bow or semi-circular part of the harp where there is some damage to the edge. The harp is banjo-shaped in plan and lozenge-shaped in section. Jews harps were current from the Middle Ages right up until the 18th century, but Medieval examples are rare.
