Title
Circular pendant of Medusa made of Jet
Description
Circular Medusa pendant with the transverse suspension tube across the top of the head showing signs of wear. The back is highly polished. The sketchy depiction of the winged head-dress make sit clear that the craftsman was unfamiliar with his subject and was unsure precisely what he was suposed to be showing. Six s-shaped snakes are arranged around the head but do not touch the edge of the pendant. Decsribed in Eboracum as being found with a group of beads to a necklace, and as 'lacking the vigour and character' of YORYM : H2443. Described in Eboracum ( RCHME, p70) 'Coffin of lead, found in 1892, under the street in Walmgate, containing a female skeleton, seven necklaces, sixteen pins, three jet necklaces one a pendant medallion of a Gorgon, four jet pins, a bone pin and two clear glass bottles with long necks are now in the Yorkshire Museum. One Coin is identifiable as of Septimius Severus'. Coffin accessioned under YORYM : 2010.1227.1. Reflective spectroscopy analyses by Allason-Jones and Jones 2001 produced an optical reflection of 0.21%, identifying the material as true jet.
