Jerome Guerin, item 10 |
Description |
English: Jerome Guerin was my uncle. Born in Killarney, Ireland, he attended veterinary college in Dublin and was a popular rugby player with Leinster. He enlisted in 1914 with the Second Battalion of the Leinster regiment. What we know of his experiences is largely gleaned from letters home; in August 1916 he wrote to Mary Guerin, his mother, telling her that he hoped the war would be over soon, and concluding "A letter out here from home is like nothing on this earth; you can send me on more cigs and chocs and if it could be managed the Cork Weekly Examiner every week." On 20 September, a telegram arrived to say he was dead. He has no known grave. |
