Description
English: Jen Nigeria - Soul Vessel; Terracotta ln a number of tribes in northeast Nigeria the dead are buried twice. Between the first and the second interment there is an interval of from several months to a year, and during this period an urn is prepared for the soul of the deceased. The soul is enclosed in this vessel to prevent it from wandering about and causing trouble. lnsome parts such a vessel is prepared for the souls of the departed on the day when they are commemorated and their visit is expected in the village.The first urns of this type were brought to Europe at the turn of the century. They were designated as being of "Jen" origin, the Jen tribe with a population of some 10,000 belanging to the Bachama (or Bata-Bachama) group and inhabiting an area along the Benue river.
