Description

SCENE IN GARY, IND.

Date: Circa 1910 Source Type: Postcard Publisher, Printer, Photographer: M. L. Photo Company (#87) Postmark: July 9, 1913, Gary, Indiana Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: Constructed in 1909, three years after the founding of Gary, this 133-foot tall tower containing a 290,000 gallon tank was listed as "endangered" by Indiana Landmarks but was demolished in 2020 by the Indiana-American Water Company. The structure was designed by John W. Alvord of Chicago. The tower was 30 feet in diameter and sat on eight 90-foot steel columns. The Gary Heat, Light, and Water company wrapped the tank in a octagonal concrete block shell with a decorative cornice and parapet wall. It was the gem of Gary's Jefferson Park.
