Soil Survey ofJefferson County, Alabama 1910 Jefferson County, named in honorof our third President, is located innorth-central Alabama, on the south-em extension of the Appalachiansystem and in the center of rich iron,coal and limestone belt of the South.The county contains 719,360 acres,or 1,124 square miles, and is an ir-regularly shaped parallelogram, withits longer dimension, 46 miles, fromeast to west, and its shorter, 38 miles,from northeast to southwest. The surface of the country ismainly mountainous to hilly and thedrainage is well developed, as shown bythe numberless rounded hills, valleys,and the muchdissected s ur-face. In 1817 Ala-bama was or-ganized as aterritory, andin 1819, admitted as a State.At the firstsession of thelegislature Jeff-erson Countywas formed fromthe southernportion ofBlount County.Since 1890, how-ever, as partof Jefferson hasbeen annexedto Walker, anda portion o fShelby joinedto Jefferson.
