Tourists are taken on a "Land-Rover Safari" through a village in the West African country of Gambia. Photo taken in 1984. Gambia is a country on the West Coast of Africa. It is the smallest African country and is largely surrounded by Senegal (except on its Atlantic Coast). Once part of the British Empire, Gambia became an independent country and Commonwealth Member-State in 1965. In the past, Gambia was one of the main places where locals were captured and sold into the western slave trade. Famously, the book and television series "Roots" told the story of one of those people and his descendants. Nowadays Gambia is a very popular Winter tourist destination, where the locals are very friendly, costs are low and there are superb beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean. |
