Jeanie McPherson Barclay SMITH. Nursing Sister 2Res/S1633 QAIMNSR 24th General Hospital at Etaples. Born 22 February 1874 at Belevue, Aberlour, Banffshire to John, pharmacist, and his wife Margaret Smith, nee McPherson. Scottish 1881 census. Named as Jane, with her parents and siblings residing with her grandfather at High Street, Aberlour, Banffshire Scottish 1901 census Hospital nurse aged 27 at Lauriston Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh UK, The Midwives Roll 1904-1959. Enrolled 19 December 1911. Address of residence at this time was 63 Myddelton Quare, London 19 December 1911 She died from endocarditis (rheumatic fever) at the Villa Tino Hospital Le Torquet 28 April 1916 aged 42. Her father was granted a gratuity 31 August 1916 revised 13 November 1920. Laid to rest in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France 30 April 1916.

Notes from her service records Trained as a nurse at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary between October 1901 and December 1904 and left the hospital June 1907. The army council on 03 April 1907 approve of the appointment of this lady as a staff nurse in QAIMNS

Following is an extract from a letter written by Miss Mary G Smith dated 13/3/31 and re-written as a Minute Sheet No.1. R. Records. Will you deal with this please? Miss Jeanie Macpherson Barclay Smith was appointed to Q.A.I.M.N.S. as Staff Nurse on 20 September 1907 served at Millbank from that date until 8 April 1911 when she was transferred to the Connaught Hospital, Aldershot. She resigned her appointment on 26 July 1911. Miss Smith afterwards joined the Q.A.I.M.N.S. Reserve and served from 5th February 1914 to 25 May 1914 at the King George V Hospital Dublin on temporary duty. On mobilization she was posted to No 5 General Hospital Etaples on 11 August 1914 and died at the Villa Tino Hospital Le Torquet 28 April 1916. Signed by ? Matron – In – Chief Q.A.I.M.N.S.

Awarded Royal Red Cross Medal 1st Class. 23 June 1915 (London gazette dated 23 June 1915) and was Mentioned in Despatches (France) (London Gazette dated 22 June 1915.
