Summary

[edit]
Description

The Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable Homesite in Chicago, a national landmark (1779). It is the place where Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable built the first permanent (non-native) residence in what is now Chicago. Point du Sable was of African descent, probably from Santo Domingo or Haiti. Little is known of his early life. In 1779, he was living in what is now Michigan City, Indiana, when he was arrested by the British under accusation of being a spy. Some time in the 1780s, he settled on the north bank of the Chicago River, near its mouth. In 1800, Point du Sable sold his house to John Kinzie and moved to St. Charles, Missouri. Point du Sable was mostly forgotten until the 1933 World's Fair, when African-American advocates were able to get the fair to present a replica of his cabin as part of an exhibit on the history of Chicago.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 76000690.
