Ce tableau de Gérôme illustre un phénomène survenu au XVIIe siècle en Europe, et plus particulièrement aux Pays-Bas, alors appelés Les Provinces Unies. Originaire de Turquie, la tulipe fut importée en Europe au XVIe siècle avant de se répandre presque partout pour devenir un objet de luxe très prisé. L’engouement pour cette fleur, « la tulipomanie » atteignit son apogée au début du XVIIe siècle et son prix monta en flèche sur les marchés. Cette bulle spéculative creva vers 1636-37 et la valeur de la tulipe s’effondra pour ne rapporter à ses propriétaire que 5 % de leur investissement initial. Le tableau de Gérôme dépeint un noble qui tente de protéger son parterre particulièrement florissant des soldats expédiés pour le détruire.
