Description
English: The portrait of Jean-Jacques Rousseau by French artist François Guérin, shows the political philosopher seated at a desk with quill pen and envelope. It was painted around the time he wrote two of his most famous works, The Social Contract and Émile or On Education. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was amongst the first modern writers to seriously attack the institution of private property. He argued that the goal of government should be to secure freedom, equality, and justice for all within the state, regardless of the will of the majority.
