d, with a religiousrespect, the minaret of its ancient mosque, and thefamous tomb of its eminently holy founder, the Pan-geran Kudus. But it has not allowed its materialinterests to suffer ; it has left the ancient city to thememories of its historic past, and has built beside it anew city, which is completely modern, although purelyin the native style. The wooden dwellings are neater,cleaner, and more graceful than in any other part ofthe island ; their facades, delicately carved, are famousthrough all Java. It is to this charming town that theinhabitants of Kudus, energetic brokers and carriers ofproduce, return after scouring the country from oneend to another, sometimes for years together, in orderto take their well-earned rest and enjoy the fruits oftheir labour. Salatiga contains an almost equally industrious popu-lation, and enjoys a delightful climate, which has ledto the erection of a sanatorium. Ambarawa, in a steep, marshy valley of the volcanp* P anger an = Lord or Prince.
