Summary

[edit]
Description

Large storage jar with a incised dog representation. Askitario in Rafina, Attica. Early Bronze Age, 2500-2100 BC.

The dog outlined on the storage jar to guard the family's food is appropriate and expressive. It was an amusing gesture by the skillful potter as well as ideogram symbolizing man's first faithful friend and protector.
