little of his fine outlook, hewill probably tell you he has a view of Fuji from hiswindows. Stylish carriages roll by, coachman andfootmen often in a neat liveiy of dark blue, tight-fitting trousers, like the jinrikisha mens, belted tunic,with flowing sleeves, and white mushroom hat. Themasters crest or initial, worked between the shoulders,completes the costume. There are pretty girls onhorseback, too, with running grooms ahead, and plentyof jinrikishas dashing down at breakneck pace, or toil-ing up, pushed by an extra man beliind. They sayaccidents are not frequent; but many residents wholove their lives prefer to walk the hill both ways—apractice which must cultivate excellent muscles. One of the lower slopes, called Camp Hill, is linedwith Japanese shops—great places for old stamps andcurios of more than doubtful authenticity. Thisregion is part of the old village of Honmura, whichwas here long before the Black Ships came fromAmerica; and a guard-house—Japanese, of course—
