Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On November 1, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of autumn in Japan. Red tones predominate in the high elevations on Honshu (the largest island), marking areas where the leaves of deciduous trees are approaching peak color. In Japan, autumn begins in September and ends in late November, with foliage colors beginning to glow as early as mid-October. Varying by region, elevation, and weather, peak foliage color sometimes may extend into early December. Two waves of foliage color occur across the country, based on two widespread tree species. The first wave of brilliant yellow comes early, when ginkgo trees change color. This is followed by shining scarlet leaves typical of Japanese Maple.
