Inscribed on the recto inside the picture field in pen and greyish-brown ink in the artist's own hand, names of the main protagonists: "Nestere", "Diomede", "Ulisse", and in the frame field, upper right in pen and dark brown ink:"Altessr.../pl..., lower right in same hand and ink "sl../Savg..both fragmented; in the frame field, lower right, in another 16th-century hand: "E da notare di mettere Ulisse in armj e figurarlo al di sopra di minor persona et Diomede/ e Nestere con barba"; on the back of the backing, in pencil, possibly in a late 19th-century hand: "Francesco Salviati Fiorent/scolare di Andr del Sarto"
