Summary
[edit]DescriptionJan Hus statue - South Nave - National Cathedral - DC.JPG |
English: Statue of Jan Hus in the Wilson Bay of the south nave of Washington National Cathedral.
Jan Hus (born 1369 - died July 6, 1415) was a Czech priest and teacher at Charles University in Prague. Hus laid a strong emphasis on scripture rather than Catholic Church doctrine, demanded an end to indulgences (buying the pope's personal forgiveness so you can get into heaven), and an end to the papacy. He also had theological disputes about other things which are meaningless today, but which got him burned at the stake by the Roman Catholics. His teachings led to a reformed Catholic Church in Bohemia, and deeply influenced the theology of Martin Luther a century later. Between 1420 and 1431, his followers beat back five different papal armies -- who attempted to wipe out Hus' followers. Their success left Czech and Slovak lands almost 90 percent non-Catholic. |
