[edit]DescriptionJames Webb Space Telescope Sunshield Rip-Stops (27881087195).jpg |
We have a new primer on the James Webb Space Telescope's tennis court-sized sunshield: go.nasa.gov/28V0XXk Fun fact - this sunshield gives the telescope sun protection equivalent to an SPF of 1 million! This telescope detects infrared light and so needs to be kept very cold and protected from the stray light and heat from objects like the Sun/Earth/Moon. This image shows an engineer in a cleanroom looking at one of the sunshield layers that shows a grid pattern of "rip-stops," which will protect the sunshield from micrometeoroid punctures.
