Summary

[edit]
Description
English: James Watt and John Harrison Two of four statues in City Square of worthy people. We all know about James Watt, but few people have heard of John Harrison.

John Harrison was the owner of a large tract of land lying at the top of Briggate, beyond the modern streets Upper and Lower Headrow. He was one of the first of the Leeds cloth merchants, and added to his inherited fortune by his commercial activities. He was well respected throughout the city and often played a role in local politics. Harrison was not just a merchant but also a benefactor; founding several public institutes, mainly for the good of the local needy.

Beyond the statues, a section of the old post office can be seen.
