Description |
English: This is apparently a good early version of RCIN 405670. However, most unusually for a copy, the head has been painted on a separate piece of canvas, which has then been inserted into the larger canvas and the pieces appear to have been depicted by different artists - an inventory of c.1790 notes that the head was 'painted by Van Somer, and made into a whole length by Van Dyck'. The head appears to be of a lesser quality than the rest of the body. It is curious that a copy should have been produced in this manner as such adjustments and additions are more typical in an original version which evolves naturally as the design is refined.
