[edit]DescriptionJames S. and Sarah E. Fowler House, Buffalo, New York - 20220227.jpg |
English: The James S. and Sarah E. Fowler House, 412 Linwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, February 2022. Built in 1886 from a design by the prolific local firm of Silsbee & Marling, the Fowler House is emblematic of the Shingle Style of architecture with its enormous side gable, asymmetrical façade, heavy and sprawling massing, and - of course - the octagonal shingles that are used as siding on the upper two stories of the house. Note also the arcaded front porch framing the deeply recessed front entrance, the New England-style gambrel on the front gable, and - perhaps the house's most unusual feature - the conical roof that tops the dormer window above the entrance, a replacement for the corner turret that usually features on houses of the style. The house was built for carriage and hardware manufacturer James S. Fowler (1821-1895), who lived there for the last nine years of his life; his widow Sarah stayed on until c. 1906. |
