| Description |
English: The James H. Webb cabin is the last known example of a dwelling built by a free black man. Built in 1852 by James H. Webb, the foundation uses ballast stones and the cabin was built from hand-hewn logs and scavenged materials. In the foreground of the photo you see a "potato hole." Formally used as a root cellar, this one also may have been used to hide slaves running for freedom as Webb Cabin is located along the route of the Underground Railroad through Caroline County, Maryland. |
