Summary
[edit]DescriptionJames Fort - Kinsale - geograph.org.uk - 1390212.jpg |
English: James Fort - Kinsale It was rebuilt after 1601 following the Spanish invasion at Kinsale as a star fort with earth banks. The central stone fort was built in the 1620s to protect the small garrison. It was largely replaced in the 1670s by Charles Fort which was better placed to protect the harbour entrance although a blockhouse on the point allowed chains to be used across the channel to prevent passage of ships. Both James Fort and the larger Charles Fort fell to James II in 1689 and were recaptured by the Williamite forces. James Fort proved expensive to maintain and was eventually abandoned. |
