1205 Front Street, (James Compton House, 1862 Beers Atlas Map of Cumberland County)

The James Compton House was built circa 1855. It is located on Front St. It is a two-story, wood-framed dwelling in the Italianate style. The foundation is parged stone and concrete with single-light casement windows. The exterior is clad in wood clapboard. The hip The main entrance occupies the center bay. The original double doors are intact; they are made of wood with raised panels, three brightly-colored glass sidelights and a four-pane transom. The original windows are also intact and functional. They are made of wood, four-over-four, double-hung sash with decorative wooden trim and iron shutter dogs. An elevated, single-story porch spans the space between the first and third bays with a flat roof supported by six square columns connected by iron balustrades. The porch is decorated with extended rafter tails and decorative bracing. The dwelling is located in the center of town, across the street from the Maurice river. The parcel is flat and grassy with large trees and shrubs in the rear yard. The house is accessed by a dirt driveway, which runs along the south elevation. The yard backs up onto Stable Lane. There are many original architectural elements remaining in the interior and exterior, such as painted "faux bois" wood grain doors, all original floors, original shutters (in storage), plaster walls, remains of original wall paper, transoms, corbels, shutters and shutter dogs. The dwelling is in good condition and contributes to the village of Mauricetown qualifying for the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.
